Weekly Serving SizeDevotion: God's Protection

The Racoon.

Isn’t God’s protection amazing? I was reminded of that today by the strangest of things, a dead raccoon in the middle of the road. Now mind you that wouldn’t have even crossed my mind a few months ago. But because of construction of new homes in our area animals have been driven out of the fields that have been empty for more than thirty years.

Months earlier, I had spotted a dead raccoon on the road in front of our house. I didn’t give it much thought since we live near irrigation canals for the farms in our vicinity and have had skunks and other animals in or around our yard. Until our beloved boxer dog, Pumpkin discovered some sort of creature late that night in our yard waking me up. She had been out running around before settling in for the night when she spotted something. Ever since she was sprayed quite frequently as a puppy by skunks she has learned to keep her distance but that her growl and a few loud barks will keep them at bay. After letting out a snap and her brisk roar, satisfied she came in for the night and crashed at the foot of our bed. With her relaxed and not smelling any worse for the wear I quickly fell back to sleep.

I was hastily brought back to life to the frightening sounds of Pumpkin leaping  and yowling across our house only to scare something badly enough to make it jump on the keys of our piano. Grabbing my husband’s arm I yelled “someone or something is in our house”. He drowsily walked down the hall to the back door only to see a puffy tail run out our dog door. He opened the back door to see what he thought was our scared cat. He flipped on the porch light only to realize he was eye to eye with a raccoon. He let out one big holler and the raccoon jumped from the rail of our deck not to return.

Although we did keep the dog door secured for the next few night we couldn’t help but give glory to the Lord for keeping us all healthy, our dog safe and no damage to our home.

He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will be not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God: he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Psalm 62: 6, 7
