Weekly Serving SizeDevotion: A Blessing in Disguise

Jenny and her kids walked into church Sunday just a few steps ahead of us one Sunday during the fall. Running a minute or two late both our families stopped in the foyer as the congregation was in prayer. Jenny smiled, gave me a hug and as she stepped back I spotted the great necklace she was wearing. The stain glass flower dangled from a black cord and sparkled on Jenny’s neck, just her style. We had seen one very similar at the Farmer’s Market earlier in the summer on a day out with our kids.

When the prayer ended, she mentioned in hushed tones that it was a gift for her birthday from a lady at work. We walked in to find a seat for the service. Sitting a row behind them I thought back to that day at Farmer’s Market. Jenny fell in love with the necklace the moment she saw it. The colors would have looked great on her and fit in with her style. Although the piece of jewelry wasn’t horribly expensive she was obedient to her household budget in not spending frivolously while we were out and about.  Jenny has been walking through a trial in her life and even though the necklace would have given her a day or two of joy she was obedient to her family’s budget.

I was amazed how God had blessed Jenny for being obedient that summer day. Months later, God had provided for Jenny through a friend from work.  When I mentioned it as a blessing she seemed surprised. Jenny thought of the necklace as a great gift but had not seen it as a blessing for her obedience.

Do you ever look around knowing you have been struggling with your life, walking through trials feeling you have been forgotten by God? We have all been in a similar situation not seeing any of the King’s glory with all the worry of our hearts. Let’s keep our eyes open to the little things that God is going to bless us with.

13 “So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul- 14 then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and oil. 15 I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.”  Deuteronomy 11: 13 - 15
